Pokémon Go players have been waiting for Gen 2 Pokémon ever since the first indications of the update emerged in January. Niantic released a video Feb. 15 on the official Pokémon Go YouTube channel about the update and in the description, it stated that  80 Gen 2 Pokémon will start rolling out “later this week.”

“Pokémon GO is a live experience which we’ll be continuing to support and evolve in new and interesting ways for years to come with new gameplay features, in-game and live events, more Pokémon to discover and much more,” Jahn Hanke, founder and CEO, Niantic Inc., said Wednesday, according to Forbes.

The Pokémon Go Gen 2 update will give players the opportunity to catch 80 Pokémon originally discovered in the Johto region in the Pokémon Gold and Silver game. If you haven’t played the original Pokémon game or haven’t followed the Pokémon series, then you might need to know a little more about Gen 2 Pokémon to make the best of the biggest update to the smartphone game till date.

The update will not only bring 80 new Pokémon but will also add new features to the game.

New evolutions: The game will provide players the biggest number of opportunities to evolve their Pokémon till now. Pokémon that occupied Kanto region will be able to evolve into Johto region Pokémon. New evolution items might also be available at PokéStops.

New encounter game play: Post Gen 2 update, Pokémon found in the wild might start acting differently than what they do now. New items might be added to carousels which would allow players to select Berries and Poké Balls from the encounter screen itself.

New Berries: Players might have opportunities to avail two new Berries by spinning the photo disc at PokéStops — the Nanab and Pinap Berries. If you feed the Pokémon Nanab Berries, it will slow its movements so that you can catch it easily, while feeding it Pinap Berries will double the candy received on the next successful Pokémon catch.

New Avatars and an expanded wardrobe: After the update, players will be able to customize their Avatar and select hats, shirts, pants and other items.

Since the update has so much on offer for players, it is necessary to use it efficiently so that you reap the best rewards in the game. Here are some tips for doing so.

Save your inventory: To make the best of the Gen 2 update, you will need to have as many Poké Balls, Great Balls, Ultra Balls, Berries, Lures or Incenses as you can get. It is advisable to resist playing the game until the update is out in order to save your inventory.

Stockpile candy: You should stockpile candy for Gen 2 evolutions you want. Since there is a large number of Pokémon being launched, the amount of candy also needs to be big since new evolutions will be taking place.

Here are some evolutions that could take place, in increasing order of likeliness:

  • Poliwag will evolve into Politoed.
  • Slowpoke will evolve into Slowking.
  • Zubat will evolve into Crobat.
  • Eevee will evolve into Espeon and Umbreon.
  • Porygon will evolve into Porygon2.

Pokémon such as Chansey and Porygon have already made it to the game in the Valentine’s Day event, so it is advisable to save at least 50 candy, according to Forbes. To evolve Eevee into Espeon and Umbreon, you will need high IV candy.

Hatch all eggs you have: It is possible that you might not be able to use any of your current eggs with Gen 2 Pokémon, so it is better to hatch them while you can.

Clear storage slots: Unless Niantic brings extra storage slots with the update, there is a chance that you will run out of your current ones pretty soon when the Gen 2 update rolls out. It is advisable to consume all your potions but retain all your balls.

Plan your Pokémon evolution: Eevee evolution into Espeon and Umbreon is expected to be the biggest one in Gen 2, but it is not the only one. It is advisable to plan beforehand which potential Pokémon you want to evolve.
